Cupid's Chokehold - Gym Class Heroes

Vi è mai capitato di ricordare solo la melodia di una canzone, senza testo, né titolo, né nome del cantante (soprattutto se in inglese)? E' imbarazzante e snervante, poi, quando si cerca di canticchiare il motivetto ma nessuno capisce a quale canzone ci si riferisce. Per fortuna che oggi abbiamo Shazam e se ci capita di riascoltare il brano in radio, basta attivare l'app e si può conoscere tutta la sua genealogia. Ma come faceva la gente 10 anni fa?!?

Era il 2006 quando le radio trasmettevano quel pezzo che mi è rimasto nella testa ma a cui non sapevo dare un nome, ricordavo solo il video visto poche volte su MTV, in cui c'era un bambino con i capelli afro vestito da angioletto. Nove anni dopo, tramite X-Factor ( Fedez aveva assegnato questo brano agli Urban Strangers), ho scoperto titolo e interprete della canzone: Cupid's Chokehold dei Gym Class Heroes.

Su questa canzone c'è tanto da dire.

Il brano, featuring Patrick Stump dei Fall Out Boy, contiene un sample di "Breakfast in America", famosa canzone dei Supertramp del 1979, sia nel riff che nel ritornello. Appartiene all'album The Papercut Chronicles (2005), ma una seconda versione, quella più diffusa, è stata registrata e inserita nell'album As Cruel as School Children (2006).Per ciascuna delle due versioni è stato prodotto un video diverso. Nel video della prima versione, il cantante della band, MC Travis McCoy, lavora in una fabbrica di giocattoli, scopre una bambola dalle sembianze umane e la porta a casa sua per far si che essa diventi la fidanzata dei suoi sogni.

Nella seconda versione c'è un'interpretazione più letterale del testo. Un piccolo cupido lancia delle frecce al cantante facendolo innamorare di ogni ragazza che vede. Con ognuna di queste ragazze la storia finisce male, fin quando non incontra la sua anima gemella (senza l'aiuto della freccia di cupido),ossia una fan che stava assistendo al suo concerto. L'attrice che interpreta la ragazza con cui alla fine il protagonista riesce ad essere felice, è proprio l'allora fidanzata di McCoy: una giovanissima Katy Perry che nel 2006 non aveva ancora raggiunto il successo mondiale.
